Back where I grew up in Evansville, IN we had a Fall Festival every year. It was a carnival. Tons of rides and games for the kids and plenty of beer for the adults. It was always one of the year’s highlights growing up. So when I heard that there was a fall festival in Newport News my compadres and I thought we should go check it out.
It was nothing like what I used to have back home. There was no beer anywhere. What was the point of pre-gaming Mickeys in the parked car if there was no party in the park? The whole thing looked like a big market to me as the park was just full of people selling shit. Sure there were horse wagon rides for the kids and this evil magician, but the whole thing just felt LAME. One of the stages we saw had some Native Americans performing a rain dance, and the other over by the food had some guy playing guitar to an empty crowd.
And speaking of food, there was plenty to get, as there were probably over 40 vendors setup all selling barbeque, seafood, kettle corn and god knows what else. I got a 4$ Carolina BBQ sandwich and some fries for the gal as we walked around. The sandwich was the blandest BBQ ever and the fries were soggy but hey, at least the Pepsi in a can tasted all right, right? What did I expect for $7?
Oh and did I mention that Stac was mad at Todd and me for being drunk and cussing loudly at the family event? I’m totally sure that didn’t happen, but anyway. Apparently we were trying to turn the whole event into some crazy nightclub outing. I don’t know what she’s talking about.
So we walked around looking at all of the jewelry and woodcrafts and other things going on for about an hour and a half and then bounced. It wasn’t a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon, but it wasn’t really all that. Maybe I’ll come back in a few years with kids. Maybe they’ll enjoy it more.
The few pics that I did take are available on this Flickr set.
