We decided to take a break from our usual Thirsty Thursday routine and head across the water to check out what was going on over in Carrollton and headed to Smokin’ Joe’s and meetup with Ed G. I had met guitarist/singer Nathan Firth over at Mugsy’s a few weeks ago and had promised him that I would make my way down there to see him. After a series of technical problems with the PA I was finally able to get up and play a few songs. I must say that the sound in that space is really nice and sounds great the way they had it run. No worries about not being able to hear vocals over the guitar there.
After a short set I finally got the chance to hear Nathan play with someone that everyone’s been buzzing about to me, Joey Marade. I can tell you now this kid is the real deal. His ear is tight, his chops are honed and his harmonizing is on point. This is one talented guy! Nick and Joe play really well together. I can’t wait for Nathan to get his copyrights in order so we can hear some of those originals!
After leaving Smokin’ Joe’s I made my way back across the bridge to meetup with Todd P at the Katt for a quick brew. He got a message about a hot band over at Cozzy’s so we rushed over there to check it out. I knew something was up when the doorman made us wait outside cause the place was over capacity, 200 people! We got in there and were able to witness the awesomeness of local roots reggae group The Prisoners. Let me tell you, it has been a long time since I’ve seen this kind of energy from a band and the crowd like I saw last night. These guys are the real deal. The entire place was on their feet dancing. It was great. You will be hard pressed to find a better bunch of musicians around here, definitely not a better blue-eyed reggae band!
While their website doesn’t do them justice (Call me guys, I can help!) it does have an up-to-date calendar extending into August. Notable upcoming local shows are:
Sunday April 19 @ Yorktown Pub
Thursday April 23 @ Jewish Mother (VAB) opening for Dubconscious
Friday April 24 @ Marker 20 (HAM)
Saturday April 25 @ Schooner’s Grill (NPN)
Thursday May 21 @ Cozzy’s (NPN)
Expect to hear more about these guys from us in the future. They are going to be HUGE.
Another HRV music fixture is in need of assistance to help pay mounting medical bills. Soundman RD Sisk suffered a stroke last month and has been left unable to work and with no income. Fender Music has donated a limited edition Fender Stratocaster and Alpha Music is running a raffle to benefit Sisk. A benefit is planned in the coming months. Sisk is undergoing physical therapy to regain his mobility. Doctors expect him to make a full recovery in the next 6 months.
Like Eric Insley, most self-imployed musicans have no health insurance, and an illness like this is financially devastating. Perhaps even more important to realize is that during the past few years, half of all bankruptcies in the United States were the result of medical bills. Even sadder is the fact that most of these were by people who had health insurance. Those without it are much worse off.
Ok, so due to time constraints and bad weather, I had to change up my plan and use a new route on my way to Seattle. First stop after leaving home was Des Moines. I rolled into town around 5:30 and checked into my room at the Holiday Inn. I walked down town to a few different bars to get the vibe of the city. Tuesday evening in Des Moines looked like Pyongyang, until I hit the bars. Here are some photos
Now these were taken before I got to the bar, and I was getting nervous, but then it got dark and the city seemed to explode.
I had a pretty damn good time. I met a few new cool folks and one guy even bought me a pizza at the bar just cause I mentioned I had been in the military! Anyway I’m in Deadwood, SD tonight and things are looking even better

Found a great local design shop out of Norfolk, Pillowhead. Was just exploring random Tweets based around the area and found @benandcandace. Checked the home page and WOW! These guys are really talented. Check their home page for more great work. Here’s one of my faves below, you’ve got to check the rest! Great to see such local talent.

I couldn’t just let this wonderful day pass by without a few choice words about the Tea Parties going on today. I’ve been watching the interwebs/twittersphere with amusment at all the teabagging jokes going around today. Also I’m amused at all the people taking this shit seriously.
I was watching the local Twitter results today and noticed a fewpeopletalkingaboutattending the local tea parties around Newport News Town Center and Virginia Beach. I was half tempted to drive on down there during my lunch break to check it out and snap some photos. I’m sure it would have been fun.
It’s highly amusing to witness the the right wing hysteria that has accompanied Obama’s few months in office. These are the same people that stood by silently for 8 years while W ran this country into the ground, and now Obama’s been ni the White House for 10 weeks and they’re going apeshit. Here’s a little fact check for you: Obama’s proposed tax rate for the wealthiest Americans will still be lower than what it was when Regean was president! Here’s a chart in case you’re slow:
And as ProgressNotCongress notes, the funniest thing is that it is the middle class out here acting outraged at the bidding of the superwealthy, Fox News, and the GOP. They’ve let 8 years of war, no-bid contracts, and destruction of science, environmental and constitutional rights go by without a squawk and have gotten riled up at a massive liberal spending plan for education, healthcare and energy. Of course there’s the bank bailouts to be mad about, and these people probably think TARP’s all Obama’s fault as well. While I’m not a huge fan of the bailouts per se, the President believes that one dollar given to the banks get’s spent 7 times over in the larger economy.
My high school government teacher, Mr. Tenny, used to have a sign up in his class that said “The richest 10% of the population controls 90% of the wealth.” These same people are now inflamed because they pay 72.4% of the tax revenues. Outraged that those making less than $44K a year only pay a collective 3.3% of the total tax burden each year, they go out of their way to hide their income in tax shelters, charitable deductions, and spend hundreds of millions on their lobbyists to get the tax rules changed to benefit them, their bank accounts, and the corporations that they work for.
What’s sad is the sheer number of middle Americans that have gotten swept up in this hysteria. We saw the beginnings of it during the election cycle as people bought into the Obama-is-a-secret-Muslim propoganda that still survives to this day. The right wing hype machine stirs up a little outrage and the 43% of the population that watches Fox News gets whipped into a rabid frenzy. I understand that most of these people are acting in their self-interest, I feel that it is the result of a the deluded propoganda that they have been exposed to and that they are actually serving the best interests of the right wing elites.
To give you a similar example from (not-so) recent American history, look to the situation that existed in the runup before the Civil War. The slaveowners in power realized that if the lower class were to side with the slaves, it would be the catalyst for a massive revolt and uprising against the slaveowners and status quo. Accordingly, institutionalized racism was used to stir up the us vs. them mentality and discourage white working classes from socializing and empathizing with the slaves. What does that have to do with today’s events? It is analogous to the division of the middle class against the impoverished and lower income populations of this country and the alignment of them with the upper class.
The original Boston Tea Party was a protest over taxation without representation. Today’s tea party seems to be just about taxation. While a lot of the people that turned out today are protesting against sincerely held beliefs and outrage over the bailouts, I suspect that the real agenda is to align the upper middle class with the super-rich and preventing centrist, middle-of-the-road America from pursuing a more progressive, liberal agenda that favors the disenfranchised.
Reality is purported to have a liberal bias. Today’s teabaggers are so far out of this plane of existence, deluded and frightened that America is going to turn into a welfare state where everyone who works for a living has to pay rent for those to lazy to go out and get a job. What would they instead advocate for, a me-first apocalypse wasteland of militias holed up in compounds waiting for the End of Days while the rest of the world burns?
Last month some of these people were complaining that Obama’s tax stimulus amounted to an extra $13 dollars a week or so. Now people are complaining that Obama will have to raise their taxes down the road by a similar amount to pay for the stimulus that was just passed. What they don’t understand is that they’re leading the call of people for whom a change in the tax rate means millions of dollars. As someone who just paid over two month’s salary on last years taxes I can understand a bit of the outrage that the teabaggers are feeling. I feel that a lot of it has been drummed up by disinformation and propaganda, and unfounded fears of America turning into a European Socialist state.
There has been an imbalance in American society toward wealthy individuals and corporations over the past few years, a preference toward wealth building over quality of life and basic government services. One of Obama’s main strengths is his activist (read radical) and community organizing skills. He showed exactly how to rally a class of disenfranchised people toward a common cause, and he has used that power to pass revolutionary spending plans in education, healthcare and energy infrastructure. Conservatives hate this, and so they have used their own community organizing to create their own movement.
So my friend Andy Loudermilk just joined Facebook today. I asked him what was up with his band, Sonz of Godzilla, and he said that they were searching for a new bass player and drummer to start a new band. Since I love Andy and his music I told him I would pass the info on.
Here’s the Craiglisting with the full info. This is around Hampton area. The Sons have played shows down in the Outer Banks, so be prepared to travel. If you check they’re mySpace page you can hear some of their tracks. They are definitely NOT a cover band.
Kerry’s one of the best songwriters I’ve met. The first time I saw him was back in 97 back in a band called Butter Mailbox, and they were pretty great. Kerry’s developed a fusion of fast rock/punk/rap that is really unique. Listen to the tracks he’s got over on the mySpace page and despair that such a uniquely talented guy only plays covers live!
Paul’s one of the best bass players in the region, hands down. I first started seeing him up at the Tuesday Open Mics at Goodfellas way back when. He is just so solid and on point. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the man play a wrong note.
And of course Joe’s a great drummer and a great guy. He’s been calling me to fill in for Kerry during some emergencies, and I’m honored that Joe would consider me good enough to stand in for him.
I talked to everyone about the region’s lack of support for original music, and we’re all on the same page that there needs to be a change. Look for more from these guys later.
Right, so I was hungry and it was lunch time. My friend Ryan and myself were looking for a homy little place to eat. We proceeded to Canal Fulton and found this little place called Sisters Pizza & Century House Restaurant. It is located on the Erie canal (like the song in elementary school…) on South Canal st. and has a nice variety of foods with a scenic ambiance.
Mr. Al Berry is one of the proprietors, and I told him that I would post a review on here, but he didn’t seem very thrilled… Anyway I enjoyed the place and if you are ever in northeast Ohio, check it out. Later that night I travelled up to Cleveland to check out some bars with my cousins. We had a blast at this little place called the ‘Diamond Mine’. Plus the staff was out of this world awesome. Check it out!
Monday I’m heading for Detroit, so keep an eye out, and check my flickr site for more photos…
Since I’ve been getting dozens of Google hits for Walt Redmond Jr., I’d figure I’d let everyone know that his funeral is planned for Monday, April 14 at St Marks Methodist on E. Mercury Blvd. in Hampton.
Tonight @ 10PM, April 9, I’ll be playing an acoustic set with drummer Joe Milosevich at Keagan’s bar in Newport News. Come on down if you can and say ‘hi.’
I’ll be stepping out @ 11 to take care of some work stuff for about half an hour and Bill Morris will be filling in during that time.
