Just over two weeks left before my birthday and hopefully, a new Flip Mino HD camcorder that will let me take better videos. Till then you can check out these shakey iPhone videos that I’ve taken over the past week around town. I’m headed out of town this weekend, so enjoy your Memorial Day holiday and we’ll see you next week!

Clayhill Farms, Community Supported Agriculture

Hey Hampton Roads, did you know that you can get local, fresh, in-season produce straight from local farms? That’s right, a number of local farms sell shares of their harvest through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs. You can pre-purchase a share of the harvest before the growing season begins. Clayhill Farms in Suffolk (PDF), for example, sells 100 shares a year for between $18 and $25 a week which gets you a basket of fresh veggies for 20 weeks starting June 8. The baskets or boxes will contain a variety of foods including sweet corn, tomatoes, cantaloupe, basil, peaches and more. There will be a variey of produce throughout the season, although specific items cannot be guarranteed.

CSAs are a great way to eat healthy and support local farms in the area. Contact Edmond, Janice & Anson Morris at clayhillfarmssca at yahoo dot com for more info.

Here’s a recent Daily Press article with info on other local CSAs.

LocalHarvest.com, a national database of CSAs.

RVAMag.com

Here is how you do a regional magazine: RVAMag.com. It’s described as a “culture hub for our beloved Richmond, VA”. Well done guys. You’re setting a fine example that we would do well to learn from here at EpicHoney.

You can follow @rvamag on Twitter.

Deathray: Free art/music show, Saturday May 16

deathray2

We’ve been following Charlie Restless for a couple days now on Twitter. He releases prints and t-shirts, hats and such under the Restless Bodies label.  Apparently he’s also pretty rad and hangs out with a bunch of dope-ass motherlovas, taking over public parks and apparently showing no respect for the LAW! I’ve never met the man, but he must take a shower in awesome every morning cause he posts links to stuff like Richmond’s newest skate rag, Born Ugly and stuff like this on his blog:

Yes, that’s Ryan Gosling playing piano and singing while leading a chorus of elementary school kids dressed in Halloween costumes. /brain explodes.

Anyways, so this Saturday, Chicos in Chesapeake, art by Restless Bodies, music by Berk Visual. I’m gonna try to get across the Southside myself to meet these guys in person. Should be cool.

Photos from The Last Waltz, Walt Redmond Jr. Benefit

We get a lot of Google hits for our past coverage of Walt Redmond Jr. I thought I would pass along these photos from Vaughn Deel’s Facebook page where he posted a couple of albums of pics from last Sunday’s The Last Waltz Benefit at Saddle Ridge.

VBNightlife.com

I almost declined to post this for reasons I’ll explain shortly, but here goes anyways. Via The Alfredo Torres Debacle comes word of VBNightlife.com, a Ning based social network based around, can you guess? Virginia Beach nightlife, music, bands and DJs.

First off it’s a great idea, it has about 500 members and seems to be a good source of info on what’s going on round the HRV. Why VBNightlife though? NorfolkNightlife, 757Nightlife, HamptonRoads/HRVNightlife would have been better picks. Why tie yourself to one city out of 7 when you’re just going to be covering shit that goes on in Norfolk anyways.

And my second gripe goes out to Nicole Maxino for shamelessly ripping the music calendar off of Meona.net and reposting it without attribution. I know Meona’s Stephen Sloop personally. He has been running Meona for a decade and it’s saddening to see someone taking credit for his work again. For chrissake at least give him a link at the top of the page!

In spite of that I’m still posting to this site as it is a good resource of what’s going on over in Va Beach. They’ve got a comprehensive list of the bars and bands in the area, so it’s worth checking out.

The Last Waltz: A Benefit for the Children of Walt Redmond, Jr.

flyer_walt_6

I just got a FB invite from Suzy-Ray-Vaughn about an upcoming event this Sunday at Saddle Ridge to help raise money for Walt Redmond Jr’s children. Here’s the info from the Facebook event page:

This is a benefit to raise money for the college funds of Walt Redmond, Jr’s. children.
Walt passed away last month and his music and smiling face will be missed by many.
The show will be held at Saddle Ridge on Power Plant Parkway in Hampton, VA. Saddle Ridge is divided into two places, Saddle Ridge and the Cheyenne Supper Club. Both venues will have stages in use that day. The loud rock bands will be in the big room at Saddle Ridge and the acoustic acts will be in Cheyenne Supper Club.
Admission is $10. There will be T-shirts for sale, auction items and a CD of Walt’s music available too.
Please come out and support a great cause, have some fun and hear some great music too. We play around 8:30.
