Hey Hampton Roads, did you know that you can get local, fresh, in-season produce straight from local farms? That’s right, a number of local farms sell shares of their harvest through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs. You can pre-purchase a share of the harvest before the growing season begins. Clayhill Farms in Suffolk (PDF), for example, sells 100 shares a year for between $18 and $25 a week which gets you a basket of fresh veggies for 20 weeks starting June 8. The baskets or boxes will contain a variety of foods including sweet corn, tomatoes, cantaloupe, basil, peaches and more. There will be a variey of produce throughout the season, although specific items cannot be guarranteed.
CSAs are a great way to eat healthy and support local farms in the area. Contact Edmond, Janice & Anson Morris at clayhillfarmssca at yahoo dot com for more info.
Here’s a recent Daily Press article with info on other local CSAs.
