From the new prophets of the HRVA dance party, I give you the following. And keep your eyes and ears open HRVA. Cogan’s is looking to get pretty fresh next week with the Restless crew in the house on Thursday.

Gliss hits The Boot w/ Yesper and Pan Galactic Straw Boss on 8/12

Apparently around the HRV, when you’re silent and focus on work, you end up with a lot of near misses in awesomeness. I woke up just in time to catch the fact that Gliss will be hitting Norfolk tomorrow night, which would have been a shame to miss.

Gliss (website) brings seductive shoegaze sound to the stage, with lush, sometimes aching, vocals with a little husk to them. It’s pretty much the audio equivalent of that scene in The Fabulous Baker Boys where Michelle Pfeiffer was laid out on top of the piano. Red dress, you totally know the one I mean. They wrap you up in a warm blanket, sing you a soothing little song, and then they leave during the night while you’re asleep so the next morning you wake up with a conflict of emotions.

Supporting Gliss on their foray into the HRVA (in between their shows with The Warlocks) will be Norfolk locals Yesper (website), who kick the acoustic sound with vocals that remind you you’re still lonely on the inside sometimes, and the HRVA trio Pan Galactic Straw Boss (website). PGSB kicks it with a mean, mean post-rock sound, but that’d definitely be the easy way out to describe these guys. There’s traces of ambient, shoegaze, and noise all over the place. The show’s probably going to go something along the lines of Yesper will sit you down and get you in touch with your inner self, while PGSB stands you up and reminds you there’s life out there in the streets, and Gliss shows you there ain’t no party like a Boot party.

The show’s allegedly at 9PM, and it’s allegedly only going to cost a single $5 bill per person. Bring the guy at the door a picture of your bike, and he’ll probably throw in a smile for free.

My two cents on the weekend.

After trying to add my penny of thoughts of shows to Mike’s list (and failing epically, *shakes fist at update button*), I figured I’d just add more limelight for my shows of choice this weekend.

Tonight
Old Dominion Punk Show at SoBo. 8 PM-1AM, $5, 18+. Local punk bads David Hasselhoff’s Hair, Dead Set, The Fastermores, Know Eye-D, and DefiMinority.

Theodore w/ Andrew Bryant and Michael Young

Just a heads up for all the cool cats who get down with some good lo-fi, reach-down-into-your-soul-and-pull-the-insides-out, acoustic indie. St. Louis’ own Theodore is in town tomorrow, 30 June 2009, with support from Andrew Bryant and Michael Young. Based on their last trip through town during ‘08, their sound is pretty solid and is well worth the emotional commitment (and the $5 in the least.) The show starts at 9 PM for a mere 5 spot. Tell a friend, these guys will be big in that Cursive sorta way one day.

the black hollies rock your boots off.

Two clips from The Black Hollies at The Boot on 6/26/2009. Not quite the same as the Loose Lips event below (that now I really wish I had cloned myself to go to as well), but the Black Hollies put on a strong nonstop show. In the entire two hour set they threw down, they stopped once for 5 minutes or so. Otherwise, where one song ended and the other began was pretty hard to tell the way they overlapped and segued their songs together.

Less babble, more rockin’. Right?

Lost in the Trees/Sam Karr at The Boot 6/20

A clip each from Friday’s eccentric show at Norfolk’s The Boot (excuse the shaky vision, it’s hard to hold a cam in one hand, and a glass of Boot brew in the other). The show opened with Chesapeake local Sam Karr. Sam’s got some fresh and captivating guitar skills, with his solo show ranging from the use of live loops to some wicked tap and fretwork. Words just don’t do this justice. You can find more of Sam’s work at http://www.purevolume.com/samkarr . Check the HD action too, because Sam’s hands actually move fast enough to look like the video skipped normally.

The show’s headliners,  Lost in the Trees, hail from “down south yonder way” in Chapel Hill, NC. There was a majesty in the way they completely filled the stage with an asundry assortment of instruments; from a string section, to mandolin, to even a tuba. The only way to even begin to wrap your mind around what kind of magical and lush sound this can be, is to catch them live or check out their Myspace, http://www.myspace.com/lostinthetrees . Here’s a clip from their set, which ended with the band in the audience doing that thing they do.

A photo set from this show is available to view here.
