Lost in the Trees/Sam Karr at The Boot 6/20

A clip each from Friday’s eccentric show at Norfolk’s The Boot (excuse the shaky vision, it’s hard to hold a cam in one hand, and a glass of Boot brew in the other). The show opened with Chesapeake local Sam Karr. Sam’s got some fresh and captivating guitar skills, with his solo show ranging from the use of live loops to some wicked tap and fretwork. Words just don’t do this justice. You can find more of Sam’s work at http://www.purevolume.com/samkarr . Check the HD action too, because Sam’s hands actually move fast enough to look like the video skipped normally.

The show’s headliners,  Lost in the Trees, hail from “down south yonder way” in Chapel Hill, NC. There was a majesty in the way they completely filled the stage with an asundry assortment of instruments; from a string section, to mandolin, to even a tuba. The only way to even begin to wrap your mind around what kind of magical and lush sound this can be, is to catch them live or check out their Myspace, http://www.myspace.com/lostinthetrees . Here’s a clip from their set, which ended with the band in the audience doing that thing they do.

A photo set from this show is available to view here.

Mercy Creek set from Marker 20

We’ve got 10 clips of Americana duo Mercy Creek from last night’s performance at Marker 20. Cheryl Nystrom, and Jim Ball are two of the hardest working musicians I’ve ever met. They tour constantly (seriously, look at their schedule) and always put on a great show. Check it out.

These are all HD, so hit the icon to get the full quality video.

Please note two of the clips are missing at this time, we’ll try to get that corrected for ya real soon.

And sorry about all the chatter in the background. That’s what happens when you get drunk with friends and have a good time, right?

Lost Until Dawn – So Cold

So last Thursday after recording the Lord Bowler videos and playing w/ Mr. Falls as Barfly, we rolled over to Mugsy’s where Allen Uhura has been hosting an alternate open mic for the past few weeks and caught some video of Lost Until Dawn.

These guys got kicked out of Marker 20 a few weeks ago for being so hardcore, so this is not for the faint of heart.

These guys have played at Budda’s Place as well. You can check out more from them on their MySpace page.

World Premiere of Lord Bowler

Caught a new band out this week at Marker 20 and I am really excited about these guys: Lord Bowler. This was their first time playing out of their living room and I thought they did a really good job. They’ve got a unique original sound and played their own music. Just what we’re looking for here on EpicHoney!

Lord Bowler is Maria Thomas on keys, Matt Thomas on bass, Mike Lusby on guitar and Mike Anaya on drums. At least, that’s how they start in this first clip; they switched up instruments every song!

We’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from these guys!

L00se Lips Sink Ships

We’ll be getting the videos from last night’s open mics up on the site later tonight, for now I just wanted to tell y’all about this:

L00se Lips next Friday 6/26/09 at Bar None in Va Beach with OH!BOY, D. Beard, LRDMRCY and DJ Ronnie. Click the image to be taken to the L00se Lips site. There’s a tab at the top that takes you to the DJ Page, where you can also download a short set by OH!BOY to get a feel for what to expect.

We’ve also just heard word that there is also a new electronic night at Budda’s Place (!) every Thursday. We don’t have the details yet but from what I hear it’s electro, house and drum and bass.

Lastly, we’ve added blogrolls to the sidebar for Hampton Roads and Richmond. Two sites we’re adding today:

Fantastic Planet – This RVA DJ crew is adding a HRV chapter with a quarterly event. The last one was April 25 at the Jewish Mother, so we should be due for another sometime in July. Check out the Official FP Mix here and wish for more.

No\Ones\Watching – Personal Blog of HRV’s own designer Josh Newton. Interesting read and good source of info for some local shows and events.

That’s it, we’ll have some juicy new videos of two new local bands later today Cya!

Rebel Session live DJ mix

From the #HRVA feed, Rebel Sessions on a great new site, Mogulus. It’s a streaming video site with integrated chat room. Really cool.

Phrantik, Splatterhouse and the Darkitect. I’ve heard everything from dubstep, electro and  drum&bass, and a even a track that samples ‘this is rock and roll keyboard‘. It’s still going on now, and should be a regularly occuring event on Fridays. Like a local Betalounge.

Follow drscodelab on Twitter for more updates as to what’s happening.

HRVMixtape

So Alfredo Torres wrote a blog post up over at HamptonRoads.com listing his pics for a locals only mixtape. I applaud the idea. Torres didn’t build any links out to any of the bands listed so I figured I’d start a #HRVMixtape hashtag on Twitter and post up the links to the bands’ mySpace, YouTube or mp3 links.

As I was posting Torres’s pics, a few other people started adding their picks as well. I’m still posting to it and hopefully others will their own down the road. I think this is a great way to discover good local music.

So check the stream for all the good picks and add your own by posting a Tweet with #HRVMixtape, the name of the band, the song, a link to a page where we can hear such song.
